George Sebesta Renovations can assist southeastern MA homeowners in planning the deck that is best suited for the home. There are many deck design options available and many factors that have to be considered - access in and out of the house, the height of the deck, stairs, the yard space available, the grade of the yard, whether the deck is attached to the house or free-standing, etc.
Footings and posts must be installed in order to support the deck; they support the beams which support the joists and the deck boards. The larger the deck, the more footings will be required. Joist size can vary from 2 x 6 to 2 x 10, and the spacing can be 12", 16" or 24" on center. The most popular sizes of deck boards are 2 x 4, 2 x 6 and 5/4 x 6.
Porches are usually attached to the front or back entrance of a home. The porch may be enclosed by screen, latticework, or other light frame walls extending from the main structure. Porches are typically attached to the rest of the house, while decks are usually are open. Covered porches provide protection from sun or rain and essentially provide an additional exterior room that can also serve as living space. Porches are great for family gatherings, entertainment areas, or simply as a place to relax.

Redwood, cedar, and pressure-treated pine are all popular deck board options. Each will resist moisture decay, and even though they look very different when new they all weather to a similar shade of gray. Many people will prefer one over the others, but your choice will probably be determined by price, availability, and quality which vary greatly for each of the three decking options.
